A Dentist’s Guide To Halloween Candy

Published on October 23rd, 2018

It’s that time of year! Halloween has rolled around again, the fan favorite holiday of many adults and kids alike. We’ll admit it, getting dressed up, hanging out with friends, and free candy doesn’t sound too bad to us either. But watch out for the “tricks” that come along with too many treats. Our South Loop dentist wants to make sure your family’s smiles stay happy and healthy, so we’re sharing a few tips to make this Halloween a little more tooth-friendly.

Sticky & Gummy Snacks

Keep an eye on these this Halloween. More often than not, gummy candies stick to your teeth and are quite difficult to remove. This gives cavity-friendly bacteria time to grow, leaving you susceptible to decay.

Hard Candies

Eat with caution! If you’re not careful, hard candies have the potential to crack or chip your teeth. On top of that, they tend to linger in your mouth for longer periods of time than candies you chew. This causes your teeth to soak in a sugary bath for far too long.

Sour Treats

Beware of sour candies as well. Foods that make you pucker are typically very acidic. Acidic foods compromise and erode the enamel on your pearly whites, making them more vulnerable to cavities.

We saved the best for last. When it comes to candy, chocolate is as close as it gets to a dental health winner. Unlike the treats mentioned above, it washes away from teeth easily and contributes some nutritional value. Our South Loop dentist recommends choosing dark chocolate over milk chocolate to cut down on your sugar intake.
