National Children’s Dental Health Month

Published on February 28th, 2019

Every February, dentist all over celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month by encouraging you to make oral hygiene a priority with your children. This year’s slogan is, “Brush and clean in between to build a healthy smile.” Getting your children in a good dental routine can be difficult, so join your South Loop dentist and make dental care fun with these facts!

Tooth Decay

Your child should visit the dentist by one year of age to deal with any potential dental problems. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), tooth decay is the most common issue seen in children. This is why it is so important to educate your child early on so that they build a fun routine. Make brushing your teeth a family activity and lead by example.

Germs Cause Decay, Not Food

Kids are told over and over again that eating sugar will cause their teeth to decay, but this information is not completely correct. It’s not what food they are eating but it is how often they eat it. No food has to be completely outlawed, your child just has to get into the routine of rinsing or brushing after eating.

Fluoride is one of the most important ingredients in your dental care routine, but it should not be introduced to your kids until they can be trusted to not swallow it. There are fluoride free products that can be used for younger children to introduce them to the routine of brushing, flossing and rinsing.
