THE SMILE THEY DESERVE!

Dental Hygiene Month

Published on September 28th, 2017

October has been named National Dental Hygiene Month, in an effort to celebrate the great work of dental hygienists and raise awareness of the importance of good oral health. Regular dental visits are essential in order to maintain healthy teeth and gums. However, in between dental visits it’s also important you work to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy. As your dentist in the South Loop, we are reviewing 4 important routines this month to help you maintain healthy smiles at home: brush, floss, rinse and chew.

Proper Brushing & Flossing Techniques

As your dentist in the South Loop, we recommend that you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes using a soft-bristled brush. The following is proper brushing technique:

  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
  • Move the toothbrush back and forth in short strokes.
  • Clean the inside surface of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.
Brush outer surfaces, the inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue!
  • Clean between your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque that is not removed from brushing.

The Importance of Rinsing

Teeth alone account for less than half of the mouth, rinsing will help to eliminate biofilm and bacteria that brushing and flossing cannot. Rinsing, along with brushing and flossing, can help to reduce the chance of dental decay and infection. Avoid using a rinse that contains alcohol.

Can chewing gum help?

Clinical studies have shown that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following a meal can help to prevent tooth decay. Chewing gum increases the flow of saliva, which will then wash away food and other debris, neutralize acids produced by bacteria in the mouth and provides disease-fighting substances throughout the mouth. Make sure the gum is sugar-free!
