Tips for Adjusting to Dentures

Published on August 7th, 2018

Dentures are a great way to replace missing teeth and provide patients with confidence that they have been missing. But adjusting to dentures can be difficult, as you are getting used to a foreign object in your mouth. Our South Loop dentist wants to help make the adjustment period as seamless as possible. If you or someone you know has just gotten dentures, make sure to keep these tips in mind.

Talk Through It

Simple tasks such as talking can become difficult when you are adjusting to your dentures. To get used to speaking, try to talk slowly at first and focus on enunciating every word you say. Reading a book out loud is a great way to adjust if you need extra practice. You’ll be able to pick up speed as you get more comfortable with your dentures.

Eat Soft Foods

If you had braces, you know that eating soft foods or cutting your foods into small pieces can help you adjust. With dentures, try to chew on both sides of your mouth at once to make sure that your dentures don’t tip back and forth. Take it one bite at a time! As you get used to eating again, start incorporating different, more solid foods into your diet, but continue to chew on both sides of your mouth. Be aware that hot, hard and sharp foods should be eaten with caution.

Contact Our South Loop Dentist
