THE SMILE THEY DESERVE!

Trendy Teeth-Whitening Methods: Are they Worth the Hype?

Published on July 12th, 2018

Whether you’re scrolling through Instagram, watching TV or reading your favorite magazine, there always seems to be a new way to whiten your teeth. Celebrities and other individuals praise the newest whitening trends, but do they actually work? As your cosmetic dentists in the South Loop, we will take you through the three most popular trends and give our honest opinions.

Charcoal

Whitening your teeth with charcoal is probably the most popular trick today. Brands claim that brushing with activated charcoal powder will absorb stains and bacteria, thus making teeth whiter. While your teeth do appear whiter after use, it’s not clear how abrasive charcoal is and what kind of damage it can do to your teeth’s enamel. It’s best to skip this one until there’s more research on what it actually does to your teeth.

Strawberries

There are a multitude of claims online that strawberries mixed with baking soda will whiten your smile. This seems like a healthy and easy way to whiten your smile, but does it work? Dr. So Ran Kwon, an associate professor and dental researcher at the University of Iowa, tested this combination and found that it did not whiten teeth.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an amazing product to have in your household; it is good for your hair, skin and for cooking. There as also claims that leaving coconut oil on your teeth for 20 minutes a day will brighten your smile. While this won’t hurt you, there is no proof that this will whiten your teeth.

While some of these resources make your teeth appear whiter, they either aren’t tested or aren’t proven to work. In order to get the beautiful white smile you deserve, schedule an appointment with one of our cosmetic dentists in the South Loop today.
